Position Summary:
The Associate Scientist is responsible for development and execution of downstream related projects with moderate direct supervision. The individual reports to a more senior scientist level or above on relevant projects. The individual will provide expertise in the development and optimization of downstream processes.
Responsibilities:
- Setup, operate, and maintain the downstream bioprocess related equipment, such as AKTA, TFF system, centrifuge, filters etc., to carry out the experiments of the relevant projects
- Develop, optimize, and characterize downstream processes, as needed, to improve the purification yield and product quality
- Record, analyze and report related experimental data
- Resolve technical or equipment problems that may arise
- Order the needed materials and supplies for the relevant projects
- Work with the other project team members to solve any arising problems during the project period
- Attend the regular group meetings to update the progresses of the projects
- May function as the Downstream Development group’s representative/team lead on cross-functional team projects
- Train PD or manufacturing staff to perform downstream processes, as needed
- Maintain all notebooks and documentation according to department standards.
- Write development reports, SOPs, and batch records
- Ability to work well in a team environment. and independently as required
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple activities while maintaining quality
- Ensure and promote safe environmental and laboratory practices
Qualifications:
- BS or MS degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical/biochemical engineering, or related fields
- MS with ≥1 year or BS with ≥3 years of experience with downstream processes including primary recovery, chromatography, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, viral filtration/inactivation, and formulation for biologics drug substances development
- Hands on experience with AKTA and TFF system is preferred
- Experience with ion exchange, hydrophobic, mixed mode and affinity chromatography with AKTA purification systems
- Able to work independently and on cross-functional teams
- Good equipment troubleshooting skill
- Flexible and results oriented
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent math and MS Office software skills (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
